I AM indebted to SIR APOLO KAGWA, K.C.M.G., M.B.E., KATIKIRO OF BUGANDA, for some of the stories in this book, for I first read them in his "Engero za Baganda," a little work in the Luganda language, now unfortunately out of print.
The rest is a small selection from a large number I have picked up during some years in the country–from old wives sitting over their cooking-pots in smoky kitchens, from porters round the camp fire at night, and from that charming mixed multitude which made up "the good old days."
ROSETTA BASKERVILLE.
